As a masterpiece crafted to celebrate the Genevan manufacture’s 175th anniversary, the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 5175 reinvented the melody of time, combining mechanical ingenuity with an equally exclusive personality.
To this day, the “chiming grand masterpiece” is Patek Philippe’s most complicated wristwatch” (20 complications) and one of the world’s most complicated wristwatches.
This commendation is based not only on the number of complications and parts (1366 for the movement, 214 for the case) but also on the lineup of functions which includes a grande and petite sonnerie, a minute repeater, an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a four-digit year display, a second time zone, and two patented global debuts in the domain of striking timepieces: an acoustic alarm that sounds the alarm time and a date repeater that strikes the date on demand.
With its patented reversal mechanism in the lugs, this timepiece is Patek Philippe’s first double-face wristwatch that can be worn with either dial facing up. One dial is dedicated mainly to the time and the strikes while the other displays mainly perpetual calendar indications. The time in hours and minutes as well as the date are displayed on both sides. Patek Philippe also developed mechanisms that protect the movement against unintended manipulations.
